I'm switching from Criminal Justice and I'm very interested in music merchandising. Can anyone help me out and tell me about how things go? Thanks so much,

Hi Megan,

Well the best person to talk about Music Merchandising is April Brumfield who is the Director of the Music Merchandising Program. I suggest going to the Music Industry Organization meeting in Foster 100 Wednesdays @ 9:30pm, it is the best way to get actual experience in the music industry field.

Hey Megan,

Ian is right, April is THE person to talk to about the music merch/music marketing programs at EKU.

Hopefully I can give you some info as well.

There are two music business majors at EKU. There is music merchandising and music marketing. I am a music marketing major, so I can't tell you much about the music merch. program.

The music marketing program is a BBA Business Administration w/ concentration in Music Marketing.

Basically, you take all your standard business requirements, but at the same time you get to take classes that deal with:

Intro to Music Business, Booking/Touring Management, Film Scoring, and others.

It's a very fun major, but to get the most out of your learning experience at EKU I recommend joining MIO, the Music Industry Organization.

MIO can give you a lot of hands on experience in the music business field. We recently just got back from Anaheim, CA to see the NAMM Show. NAMM is the National Association of Music Merchants. It's basically the world's largest music trade show. We have also taken trips to Nashville to check out agencies and recording studios.

Last year MIO put together the JazzFest and JazzCrawl at EKU last year. JazzFest had many opportunities for members to learn through doing, in booking, artist relations, stage setup, running sound equipment, etc.

Last semester MIO put together the first ever Fall Crawl, an event where we brought in several artists to perform at downtown Richmond businesses such as Woody's, Creative Arts by Sherri, and Gallery on Main. Fall Crawl helped me personally gain a lot of experience in marketing and promotions.

For the current semester, MIO will not be doing the JazzFest, but we will be organizing the JazzCrawl. The JazzCrawl will be a lot like the Fall Crawl and we will probably be putting together the committees soon so we can have as much time to plan and set things straight as possible.

Feel free to talk to April, or come by one of the weekly MIO meetings at 9:30 PM on Wednesdays in Foster 100.
